"The advice to eat healthier foods and be physically active is rooted in strong evidence, but it does not account for people around the world whose lives look nothing like those of the mostly white, mostly well-off residents of a Boston suburb. “The current recommendations have fallen short because of the lack of focus on social determinants of health and structural drivers” that influence a person’s health practices..."I think this is an article worth revisiting because it not only puts much of the data in context but it also humanizes the discussion. It also adds a global view that many articles lack. Health inequity is a global problem and we collectively have to acknowledge where systemic forces and our own interactions can lead to exacerbating conditions. #healthequity #healthinequity #dei #diversityequityinclusion #healthcare https://buff.ly/4c0ssdq

"For community-based health disparities research, collaboration with communities and those with lived experiences is integral, particularly when working with historically disenfranchised communities with low levels of trust in the biomedical research enterprise. Meaningful engagement with multiple partners in the community needs to occur at every stage of the research process, from concept to dissemination of research findings, and should extend beyond consultation to shared decision-making and leadership. Equitable and meaningful collaboration with key community partners helps build trust and shared values around science and research and is essential for program sustainability."This is another solid article discussing better community involvement to address health inequities in a structured manner. The authors highlight ongoing programs and workshops towards those ends and like "Unequal Treatment," these are useful programs to monitor and/or follow their recommendations. #healthequity #dei #diversityequityinclusionhttps://buff.ly/44HNlb0

I'm so pleased to have been a presenter at Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC) and to be joined by Chia-Shing Yang MD FACP FHM. #Healthequity is something we can all work towards eliminating and I'm always excited to promote the discussion not only of the problems but also the solutions. #healthcare #DEI #diversityequityinclusion #healthinequity

"The establishment of a patient safety culture in the organization was identified as the second most important step in leadership attributes in LMICs regarding ensuring patient safety. Establishing clear safety goals and expectations, promoting safety accountability, and encouraging employees to report incidents and near-misses are all part of this.Healthcare teamwork and collaboration should also be prioritized by leaders. Effective communication and collaboration are required for identifying and mitigating potential patient safety hazards. Leaders can promote communication and collaboration among healthcare providers while also implementing inter-professional team training programs. Prioritizing patient safety in healthcare organizations not only improves patient outcomes but also fosters a safety culture that promotes better quality of care and ensures patients receive the highest level of safety and care possible." Of course staffing and resources contribute to patient safety. I appreciate this article for highlighting the importance of leadership in creating the culture of safety. Leadership behaviors that include effective communication and the need for senior leaders and not just unit or site level leaders is important too. #leadership #healthcare #patientsafety #acutecare https://buff.ly/3UCqKYN

"... Indeed, the knowledge and behavioral patterns developed in adolescence play a crucial role in the establishment of a healthy lifestyle that extends into adulthood, significantly influencing lifelong health outcomes]. Particularly, improving HL during this life stage may promote early and more durable healthy behaviors, such as having an adequate physical activity, healthy dietary patterns, and undergoing routine medical check-ups, while also reducing unhealthy lifestyles such as tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug use as well as risky sexual behaviors leading to unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases."To me, health literacy is an under-recognized component of health inequity. As the authors point out, there is tremendous opportunity to reduce costs by empowering patients preparing them for the shared decision making that is required in the ever-increasing complexity of our healthcare apparatus. #healthliteracy #healthequity #healthcare

"Conflict mitigation is also necessary to improve care safety and minimize the risk of preventable complications in patients. The successful execution of shared responsibility by the healthcare teams is never possible with their ongoing professional conflicts. Long-term conflicts in the clinical practice environment increase burnout and psychological distress, trigger a toxic work culture, and elevate stress and anxiety in healthcare professionals. Potential conflicts barricade the professional communication between the healthcare teams, thereby leading to the avoidance of important patient concerns and sensitive treatment requirements.""The exclusion of non-compromising dominance, aggressive conduct, and improper use of power is paramount to strengthening the confidence of healthcare professionals intheir leadership. Ethical leadership behaviors assist in balancing constructive intention (i.e., acts to improve the loyalty perceptions of employees for the organization) and constructive deviance (i.e., acts to enhance the organizational well-being) of employees."This is a highly detailed article but one that I believe is beneficial for helping to resolve conflict. Conflict in an of itself isn't detrimental when it is focused on creating a better culture but there is a fine line in creating one that isn't toxic. All leaders can learn how to improve the way we manage conflict. #conflictmanagement #conflictresolultion #healthcare #leadership

"Sustainable measures to mitigate disparities require accountability. Public and private institutions, including societies dedicated to healthcare epidemiology and antibiotic stewardship, have made public declarations of diversity equity and inclusion commitments. Yet, without high-quality data collection and publicized data reviews, accountability may not be feasible for health systems."As this article highlights, diversity, equity and inclusion work is a CLINICAL prerogative, not just a performative one. The authors do an excellent job of outlining one clinical aspect, antibiotic stewardship, and the importance of evaluating the data to determine how individuals, systems and organizations can alter their approach to achieve better outcomes for patients. #dei #diversityequityinclusion #healthcare #healthsystems #healthequity #antibioticstewardship
