Minimum QualificationsEducation and/or Equivalent Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus five (5) years of experience in general construction maintenance, including four (4) years of experience in water and wastewater underground utility construction maintenance.

Licenses Or Certifications

  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License ( CDL ). Must obtain the appropriate class Commercial Driver’s License with endorsem*nts within ninety days of employment.
  • Positions in water distribution: Class C Water Distribution License from TCEQ required at time of hire. A Surface Water License may substitute for the Class C Water Distribution License.
  • Positions in wastewater collection: Class II Wastewater Collection License from TCEQ required at time of hire.
  • Positions in Pipeline Water Meter Operations Division must be certified for Respiratory Protection and Confined Space Entry within (6) months of employment.

Notes to Applicants

The AW Pipeline Technician Coordinator positions will work collaboratively to review work packets ensuring that all the front end work is complete prior to handing off the packet to the appropriate work crew to complete. The AW Pipeline Technician Coordinators will handle logistical details such as traffic control, permit gathering, and checking laterals. Staff will be responsible for high level problem solving and thinking creatively.

License And Certification RequirementsPositions in water distribution require a Class C Water Operator License from TCEQ at time of hire. A Surface Water Class C license or higher may substitute for the Class C Water Distribution license.

Driving Requirement: This position requires a Texas Commercial Driver’s License ( CDL ) and must obtain the appropriate class Commercial Driver’s License with endorsem*nts within ninety days of employment. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

This position requires that applicants possess a Commercial Driver License to meet the minimum qualifications. Employees possessing a CDL must comply with the Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing rules as outlined by the City of Austin Alcohol and Drug Policy for Drivers of Commercial Motor Vehicles.

Pre-Employment RequirementsIf you are identified as a top candidate and are in the military or a veteran, you will need to provide a copy of your DD-214 prior to confirming a start date.

If you are identified as a top candidate, verification of your education (which may include high school graduation or GED , undergraduate and/or graduate degrees) will be required. You must provide proof of education from an accredited organization/institution.

Job offers are contingent upon completing and passing a drug and alcohol screening test for CDL holders. Job offers are also contingent on having a driving record that meets the City’s Driver Record Evaluation Standards.

Work EnvironmentThis position is in a heavy industrial setting and requires performing many duties outdoors in all weather conditions including extreme heat, cold and rain. Position will require adaptability and willingness to change or modify work load on demand and multitask. Position requires working in environments which may have hazardous situations.

90 Day Provision For Additional VacancyThis posting may also be used to fill additional AW Pipeline Technician Assistant positions within Pipeline Operations.

All Austin Water worksite locations are tobacco-free. Use of tobacco products and/or e-cigarettes is not permitted on any AW worksite - including construction sites, parking lot, garage or in any personal vehicle located on the premises.

Pay Range

$28.04 - $34.34

Hours

Monday - Friday; 1:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Must be available for overtime, call back, and on-call for emergency response on nights, weekends, and/or holidays as required by business need. With the option to move to days if a vacancy comes available on the day shift.

Preferred Experience

  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated experience in planning, organizing, and managing the delivery of construction and/or utility projects to support organizational goals
  • Experience coordinating, collaborating, and working effectively with other departments or units within an organization
  • Experience using mobile devices in the field such as tablets and laptops
  • Basic skills and abilities with computerized maintenance management systems ( CMMS ), GIS programs, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.Performs required field investigations duties: performs test-shutout, identifies/notifies impacted customers, reviews traffic control needs, inspects area for obstacles/obstructions, and ensures utilities have been properly marked. Coordinates with operation and maintenance supervisors to ensure timely planning of infrastructure improvement and heavy maintenance project needs by work crews. Ensures utility notification groups are contacted when excavation greater than 18 inches will occur 1-call. Tracks and requests needed permits to ensure proper agencies are notified ( ROW /Permits, DAPC , TxDOT). Ensures all preparation work and notifications are complete 24 to 48 hours prior to work beginning. Coordinates with traffic control contractor to ensure there is a safe work zone for workers. Closes out work orders - provides Quality Assurance review of repair work order and makes updates to work order databases. Generates reports as needed. Handles other projects as assigned. Subject to various work shifts, on-call, and call back hours.

  • Knowledge of relational databases for data entry, data queries, and generating reports.
  • Skill in reading maps, plans, drawings, and electrical equipment.

  • Skill in using hand tools and power tools.
  • Skill in operating a motor vehicle and motorized equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to read and follow technical guidelines and standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work as an individual contributor with limited oversight.
  • Ability to meet and maintain driver eligibility standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program while driving personal and City of Austin Vehicles on official business.
